
Avi Mehta is a lifelong learner, passionate about building relationships and transforming communities through music education. He has significant experience as a conductor and educator, working with a wide range of ensembles throughout the world. Avi currently works in the San Diego Unified School District as a music educator where he directs the orchestras as numerous schools. Prior to moving to California, he served as a wind ensemble conductor at the Margarita Muniz Academy in Jamaica Plain, the artistic director of the Josiah Quincy Orchestra Program, and maintained an active role as a guest conductor in numerous Sistema-inspired programs. In addition to his work in the El Sistema community, Avi has had roles as the Music Director of the Randolph Community Band, the assistant conductor of the Massachusetts Youth Wind Ensemble at the New England Conservatory and the Assistant Director of Community Programs at the Longy School of Music. Avi holds a B.M. in Tuba Performance from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, a M.M. in Wind Conducting from Penn State University, and was a Sistema Fellowship at the New England Conservatory in 2011.
